After being restricted to using Blackberry from the very start, defense personnel will now be able to use the Android platform as well. This is all thanks to Samsung’s hard work on making a hardened and much more secure Knox version of Android. Blackberry devices have more or less dominated the usage for the defense sector till now as it was the only manufacturer that met the department’s stringent security standards consistently.

As corroborated by DoD spokesperson Air Force Lt. Col Damien Pickart, this approval is a positive step from the Pentagon to facilitate different mobile platforms as well as provide relevant options for the current 600,000 Smartphone user base within the defense network. This is also the first phase of the DoD’s plan to double the number of secure devices used by 2014.

At the same time, Blackberry’s new OS BB10 also got the Pentagon’s approval ensuring that its Smartphones and Tablets will maintain their hold within the network. Pickart has firmly stated that they would welcome other vendors who can meet the security standards so as to have diversity within the smartphone device types for the personnel in the coming years.
